Wedding Wednesday: Modern Museum Love

Let me just set the scene for you: I walk into Starbucks ready to meet Alexa for the first time at 39 weeks pregnant. We talked about her dream wedding, the aesthetic she was feeling, the vendors she's already booked, I gave her our package options and we hugged and said goodbye. Fast forward to the end of the week and Alexa emailed back to confirm and book her package and I was emailing her back, while I was in LABOR with Maddox! I know Alexa would be one of my favorites right from the start because she valued she and Chris' relationship and their soon-to-be marriage far above their wedding. Both southern transplants, Alexa is originally a Jersey girl and Chris, a California guy, they wanted to incorporate as much southern hospitality to their wedding as possible to showcase Oklahoma off to their bi-coastal families. Needless to say we started off eventful so stay tuned to hear how it all turned out... But first, a little bit about Alexa and Chris:

Alexa and Chris's story in Alexa's words:

Chris and I met on September 1, 2012 at our mutual best friends wedding in Philadelphia where I was also currently living.  He's originally from California and since we didn't live near each other due to his military service, the opportunity to meet prior never presented itself.  He was still in training and had to pass a syllabus event in order to attend the wedding, luckily for us he did!  We were both in the wedding party and although he didn't walk me down the aisle that day, sparks flew and little did we know that he one day would get to.

We spent the night toasting the newlyweds and dancing to "DJ Dan the Man," spending as much time as we could together before he had to return to Oklahoma.  We stayed in touch almost everyday and visited each other when we could to make the distance work.  Just as the distance became easier, he received orders to deploy.  Our new relationship was tested by limited communication opportunities, but survived, which solidified our efforts and faith that we are meant to be together!  I packed up and moved from the City of Brotherly Love to Oklahoma when he returned. He proposed 9 months later at the Lake Hefner Lighthouse where we had our first date. Chris deployed again 3 weeks later, therefore we waited almost 2 years for our special day. Despite the wait, the day quickly approached and we said "I do!" on May 29, 2016 atop the steps of the Gaylord Pickens Oklahoma Hall of Fame Museum in front of all of our family and friends that traveled far and wide across the country.

The weekend of the wedding came and the forecast was not looking promising. A lasting Oklahoma joke is, "if you don't like the weather, wait a day." But with an outdoor ceremony and reception planned, in May, in tornado alley, you don't just wing it day of the wedding. The great thing about Chris' groomsmen were that they were all Air Force men themselves so all our wedding contingencies got named code names and they were ready to spring into action regardless of the weather. We all knew Alexa's heart was set on all outdoors so we pre-set tables under all the awnings of the space to shade them from any elements. With the hopes that we could lift the entire table, centerpieces, place settings and all, we could carry them out into the courtyard reception area when the rain forecast lowered. Finally, around 2:30 p.m. the forecast cleared enough to lay tables so we hustled to drop tables and make it for the 4:00 p.m. ceremony time. As luck would have it, the rain held off throughout the wedding and reception!

FYI - This backdrop is now a rental in the MOE rental shop!

Guests were greeted with a cocktail hour and chicken and waffle sliders upon entry to the reception and the friendly banter raged on, east vs. west coast. Before the dancing began, the couple was serenaded by their wedding band duo, String and Sound, with a  personal military-inspired song, written specifically for them. After everyone wiped the tears from their eyes, the toasts were given, cue more tears, and the party began. At one point, Chris said to me, "I kind of hope it rains later. My family's never seen a big Oklahoma lightening storm!" I chuckled and thought, as much as I want to make your wedding dreams come true... I sure hope it doesn't pour on this party!

The party drew to a close and as the last guest entered the bus, one raindrop, two raindrops, then the sky opened up. The rain that had held off the entire day was coming down and the sky was lit up in Oklahoma lightening. I hustled to pull anything perishable off the lawn (and ill-advised pulled the twinkly light rentals out of all the trees) but it didn't matter. Chris and Alexa were married, to the person of their dreams, in the scenario of their dreams, surrounded by everyone they loved. And they even got a little show in the sky on the way home.

Vendors We Used:

Floral/Favors - Emerson Events (After she explained to me that she wanted a clean, modern but romantic feel, I knew I had to bring her to Emerson Events for her floral. I knew Camden would get her exactly and put her greens - whites - pale pinks - succulents into a plan and bring them to life and she did exactly that!)

Photography - Kristina Gaines Photography (and I couldn't have been more grateful for that for 100 reasons. Kristina captured her wedding perfectly and I made such a sweet and dear vendor friend in the process. And, by the by, all these pictures were made possible because of her permission.)

Videography - Cameron Wilson Videography (which has graciously provided his wedding video for you to watch here!)

Catering/Bar - Abbey Road Catering (I always tell people if you want the best food service EVER, hands down it's Abbey Road Catering. What is life without Kris, Meagan and Holly on your team?!)
